Islamabad — Zavia Pakistan
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Friday approached the Supreme Court (SC) once again, seeking access to the medical reports of party founder Imran Khan and visitation rights for his personal doctors and family members.
This latest move comes days after reports emerged regarding the former premier’s medical treatment. Last week, the government confirmed that Imran had been treated at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad.
PTI’s Plea for Access
Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, representing PTI, expressed concern over Imran’s health and said the party had submitted a memorandum to the SC registrar requesting:
- Immediate access to Imran Khan for his family, lawyers, and personal physicians.
- Provision of his complete medical report.
The memorandum, a copy of which is available with Zavia Pakistan, emphasized that this was the tenth time PTI has approached the apex court regarding the former premier, adding that 16 petitions had been filed in various high courts as well.
“Imran Khan’s health is a matter of national importance, not just for PTI parliamentarians, but for every Pakistani,” Gohar said.
He also noted that, despite repeated requests, no meetings had been facilitated between Imran and his family, lawyers, or personal doctors following the medical procedure last month.
Government Confirmation of Medical Procedure
According to Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar, Imran Khan was taken to PIMS on January 24 for a short 20-minute medical procedure, during which his eyes were examined. The procedure was carried out with Imran’s written consent, after which he was returned to Adiala Jail with detailed medical instructions.
The PTI has previously criticized the sudden transfer to PIMS, describing it as a “secretive move” that denied the former prime minister access to trusted physicians and kept the party and his family uninformed.
Political Reactions and Protests
The transfer prompted strong reactions from PTI leaders and allied officials, including Shafi Jan, Special Assistant to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister, who said the move raised serious questions.
On Friday, PTI members, including KP Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, staged a day-long protest outside the Supreme Court in Islamabad demanding that Imran be allowed to meet his personal doctors.
Following the protest, the party confirmed that Imran Khan’s family would be provided with a copy of his medical report, signaling partial progress in the ongoing legal and political efforts.
