Opposition Protests Outside Supreme Court Over Imran Khan’s Cases and Health Concerns

Opposition Demonstrates Outside Supreme Court

Members of Pakistan’s opposition staged a protest outside the Supreme Court of Pakistan on Monday, demanding that the pending legal cases of former prime minister Imran Khan be immediately scheduled for hearing.

The protestors also called for authorities to allow the incarcerated PTI founder regular access to his family and personal physicians.

Imran Khan Serving Sentence in Multiple Cases

Imran Khan has been imprisoned since August 2023 and is currently serving a 14-year sentence at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi in connection with a £190 million corruption case. He was also recently convicted in another case linked to state gifts.

His imprisonment has drawn significant political debate within Pakistan and internationally, with supporters raising concerns about legal proceedings and detention conditions.

Health Concerns Spark Political Reaction

In recent weeks, concerns regarding Imran Khan’s health have intensified after it emerged that he is suffering from right central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO), a serious eye condition affecting vision.

According to reports submitted to the court by his legal team, only 15 percent vision reportedly remains in his right eye. The development triggered strong reactions from opposition parties, who accused authorities of negligence and demanded an independent medical examination conducted by his personal doctors.

The protest outside the Supreme Court was attended by several prominent opposition figures, including Senate Opposition Leader Allama Nasir Abbas and PTI leader Salman Akram Raja, along with other lawmakers.

TTAP’s Role and Sit-In Protest

The opposition alliance Tehreek Tahafuz Ayeen-i-Pakistan (TTAP) also voiced support for the demands. The alliance had previously organized a five-day sit-in at Parliament House, pressing for improved medical access and fair legal proceedings for Imran Khan.

The sit-in was later called off in respect of the holy month of Ramadan, but leaders stated that their demands remain unchanged.

Political Response from PPP

Meanwhile, Sharjeel Inam Memon, a senior leader of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), commented that Imran Khan’s release depends on his party’s conduct and political approach.

His remarks added further political weight to an already sensitive situation that continues to dominate headlines in Pakistan and attract attention across countries including the United Kingdom, the United States, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia.

Ongoing Developments

The developments surrounding Imran Khan’s legal cases and health condition remain a key issue in Pakistan’s political landscape. Legal experts say the Supreme Court’s response in the coming days could shape the next phase of the ongoing political tensions.

Zavia Pakistan will continue to monitor updates regarding court proceedings, medical reports, and political reactions.
